Chronicling a journey through pre med in New Zealand.

Exam leadup

The stresses of a competitive entry course are clearly starting to show now. Cracks and fissures are appearing, and some people start crumbling down.

People are getting sick as they get more and more stressed (cortisol levels increase, which supresses the immune system). People are getting depressed. Student Health actually sees a dramatic increase in mental illness around this time every year, particularly in First Year Health Science students.

Some people give up. Some change courses, and do a Bsc. Some go and party. I know someone who is taking lot more shit than anyone should, and is still going on strong. They’re depressed. They’re sick. They don’t have the best marks, but they are up there at the top through so much effort and hard work. They’re starting to feel like their friends have forsaken them. And it amazes me how they keep going, with the same determination to achieve their dreams. They haven’t given up.

Anonymous asked: statistically, what percentage of the people that follow you do you think have sat in st. daves at the same time as you? creeeeep

How many people who run this blog do you think have sat in St Davids with you?

Study time

Its 10:30pm. Alright, tumblr time then study.

Health Science

  • (Romantically sitting with my girlfriend on a bench by a duck pond, little kids around feeding the ducks, beautiful sunshine, birds singing etc. etc.)
  • Me: I wonder where along the evolutionary pathway did humans start to find feeding other animals fun, and how this has become an advantageous adaptation?
  • My mind: WTF just came out of my mouth???!?!?!????!? Oh man health sci has ruined the way I think. This is horrible.
  • Her: I think it has been crucial in the domestication of animals- if someone feeds a cow, the cow will start following them and in turn the human receives milk, forming a mutualistic relationship. Likewise with chickens and other animals.
  • My mind: At least we both take health science.... Oh my god I love this girl so much.

I remember the days when I used to play with plasticine clay. My fingers felt sticky and clammy. The paper would be dirty and stained. The various coloured clay I used would be congealed into a blended, inseparable mess. This piece is as impressive as it is beautiful.

Dang. My best play-doh product to date is an ashtray with no cigarette-holders and a big gaping hole in the bottom. THIS is transcendent.

Health sci progress

I feel like I’m not freaked out or stressing and I’m having more free time than I was expecting while still studying.

I have the following hypotheses to explain my current condition;

  1. I am extreme efficient and am up to date.
  2. Everything I heard about Health Sci was a little over-exaggerated.
  3. I am a lot smarter than I thought I was.
  4. The year has barely got started.
  5. I have not fully understood how much of a shit hole I am in.

Being a good scientist, I apply the scientific method to my hypothesis-

  1. I am not efficient as it took me two hours to write notes for cells. Hypothesis rejected.
  2. It is unlikely that every single health sci student in the past has over-exaggerated, and so this hypothesis is also rejected.
  3. I am clearly not smarter than I thought I was, or else I would think I was smarter. Reject hypothesis.
  4. We’ve already had about 10 lectures per paper and have moved into the second topics of most of the 4 papers. The year has fully started. Hypothesis rejected.

Conclusion-

I AM IN SOME DEEP SHIT.

My Sudoku skills are awesome. I’ve been completing puzzles on my phone and can do a hard puzzle in about 4-5 minutes first thing in the morning to wake up.
